How to Recover data from RAID 5 bad stripe error and one defunct disk

Hi all!

Yesterday i’ve had a “little” problem with an old IBM XSeries server with 3 disks in RAID 5.

This server had different  troubles in the past months always in the storage context(three months ago one disk has gone defunct, two years ago the raid controller goes defunct).

Yesterday one disk (another one) goes defunct and the stripe of RAID in the same time goes in bad state ( stripe = 1 ).

IBM has different utility to test the situation of raid disks and controllers one of these is ServerRAID manager that exposes some informations about the storage system.

In this occasion i had two disks online, one defunct but the operating system (win server 2k3) didn’t boot up because of bad stripe (black screen).

I’ve found different solutions but, very very lucky, the first was the right one.

The solution, for me, was the use of a live cd of Ubuntu 11 that has come with the right tools to mount automatically the RAID disks not defunct. In my case all the needs were recover the data inside the storage and migrate it to a new server.

Other solutions that i’ve found but not used are listed below:

My Solution: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1491904

Other Solution: Raid Recontructor + GetDataBack(you must pay some dollars but isn’t expensive)
